I used the supplied settings and tweaked some things. But slic3r does not close sufacs well: there is a small gap between the wall and the infill. I also tried #3dBenchy and the result from Slic3r was worse than Cura: Cura gave a smoother surface and more details and less webs (same temperature and same layer height, of course) Can someone confirm this?

Well, it works now - but after tweaking a lot of things I cannot tell why :-)

I found that slic3r sometimes creates blobs way outside the edges of the model, and at some higher layer number - so I print in air. This happened twice now on two completely different models. Hence I always step layer by layer through the gcode in Repetier to confirm that the slicing was correct. Thinking of getting simplify3d - once I get the printer endstops and bed properly under control.
